Child & Family Therapy

Kimberly Mossman, LICSW

"There are two lasting bequests we can give our children; one is roots, the other is wings."  -Hodding Carter

My name is Kimberly Mossman. I am a child and family therapist registered in Massachusetts as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, and I have a private practice in Duxbury. I am writing to introduce my practice and the services that I offer.

I specialize in working with children ages 4-12 who have experienced issues such as sexual or physical abuse, accidents, the loss of loved ones, parental substance abuse, bullying in school, and family conflicts. These events often cause behavioral issues like aggression, trouble sleeping, impulsivity, or excessive worrying that interfere with the child’s ability to function in multiple settings. I provide a whole systems approach to treatment and, with parental consent, actively work with the child’s support system to develop behavioral plans and to coordinate care.

One unique aspect of my practice is my focus on parenting and parental self-care. When a family or child is affected by trauma or behavioral difficulties parents often have questions and intense feelings about what is happening. My practice offers and encourages individual parenting sessions so that parents have a place to gain a better understanding of the issues within their family. The sessions provide parents with an opportunity to process their feelings while learning specific techniques they can utilize at home.

I am certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy and have been working with young children and families for the past 16 years. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked for the District Attorney’s Office in the Family Protection Unit. My experience there has given me a unique understanding of the legal system as it pertains to children and families. When I work with a child who is involved in the court system, I not only aid them in healing from their traumatic experiences but am also able to help them deal with the unique challenges that the legal system places on them as witnesses/victims of crime.

My expertise in the field of trauma also lends itself well to working with individuals of all ages who are experiencing difficulty adjusting to life transitions such as entering college or the end of a relationship. Dramatic changes in life circumstances can be traumatic to person’s sense of safety and identity. Therapy is helpful in allowing a person to process their thoughts and feelings about where they are and where they are headed. I work with my clients to identify their personal goals, to remove barriers that interfere with their happiness, and to develop and execute a specific plan to lead a more fulfilling life.

I offer individual and family therapy, and I am currently accepting new clients for evenings and Saturdays. Please contact me if you wish to discuss any of the information in more depth.

I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely yours,
